Mia Johannsen is a registered clinical psychologist specialising in the treatment of eating disorders, poor body image, attachment trauma, low self-worth and relationship difficulties.
Mia is a warm and nurturing clinical psychologist who brings over 10 years of experience and a thoughtful, relational approach to her work.
She has extensive experience working with younger people across a range of presentations, with a particular focus on eating disorders, body image concerns, attachment trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-worth, anxiety, and depression.
Mia’s work is grounded in an attachment-informed and non-pathologising approach, with a focus on understanding each person’s experience with care and respect. She aims to support clients in developing a more authentic and connected sense of self—this can involve gently exploring people-pleasing patterns, building confidence in expressing needs and boundaries, and fostering a more compassionate relationship with oneself.
Mia’s clinical practice is grounded in evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Schema Therapy. Mia is also formally trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Enhanced (CBT-E) and Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) for treatment of eating disorders.
Mia’s key research in her postgraduate degree focused on the influence of early child-parent attachment on trust and relationship satisfaction later in life.
Mia aims to create a therapeutic environment where her clients feel safe to explore their inner world—at a pace that feels right for them—while gently supporting new ways of understanding and responding to their experiences. She takes a human-centred approach, recognizing that therapy is first and foremost about genuine human connection rather than a clinical transaction. Mia believes that empathy and meaningful connection is the foundation for true healing.
Mia’s clients have described her as friendly, goal-oriented and easy to talk to. Outside of work, Mia enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading a good book and walking her dog Freddie!
